Leicester City are now second in the championship, battling to secure an immediate return to the Premier League.

Enzo Maresca’s team was superb for much of the season, but the last month has been difficult, with Leeds now catching the Foxes to move to the top of the league.

With Ipswich Town and Southampton still vying for a top-two finish, it promises to be an interesting end to the season, though Leicester will be wary after appearing to be assured of promotion earlier.

Championship Table (As it stands March 19th)
Team P GD Pts
1 Leeds United 38 42 82
2 Leicester City 37 41 82
3 Ipswich Town 38 31 81
4 Southampton 36 26 73

Jamie Vardy’s experience can help Leicester City

At this point in the season, experience can be invaluable, and Leicester have one in Jamie Vardy, who has been there and done it.

The 37-year-old is a club icon considering all he has achieved, but there are worries regarding Vardy’s future, as his current agreement expires in the summer.

The striker’s 13 goals in 26 appearances this season suggest he still has a lot to give, but will he be able to score at the same rate in the Premier League? Is Leicester’s financial plight forcing them to be harsher with new player contracts?

Our authors discuss whether Vardy deserves an extension.

Chris Gallagher
It’s a no-brainer for Leicester to keep Vardy.

There will be worries about his ability to deliver week in and week out in the Premier League, but he would be an invaluable addition to the team’s locker room.

If they go up, the goal will be to stay up, and Vardy’s personality and mindset are ideal for that position. Furthermore, let us not pretend that he would provide nothing on the field, since Vardy remains sharp and his finishing talent is undeniable.

If Leicester continue in the championship, it’s another simple decision, assuming an acceptable financial deal can be agreed. Vardy will score goals in the second tier, and his influence around the club cannot be underestimated.

The main question is whether his wages are affordable for a club with PSR troubles, but given Vardy’s passion for the club, you would expect them to negotiate an agreement. So, while talks will have to wait until Leicester knows which league they’ll be in, a one-year contract for Vardy would benefit all sides.
