Mark Clattenburg, Nottingham Forest’s advisor, has revealed what he advises Nuno Espirito Santo in the buildup to games.
The former Premier League referee has been at City Ground for several weeks.
And he has now revealed what he has been working on behind the scenes in preparation for Premier League match days.
What Clattenburg tells Nuno before games
The former referee’s appointment at Forest sparked widespread outrage in the league.
He has certainly had his work cut out since joining the club, as a number of refereeing decisions have gone against Forest in recent weeks.
Clattenburg was even seen in the stands after the contentious loss to Liverpool.
Speaking with Jamie Martin, Clattenburg revealed what he offers Nuno Espirito Santo before a game.
He said: “It would be more details; for example, statistically, I would look at if the referee’s issuing more yellow cards for descent, time wasting. So you’ve got to look at a lot of other stuff, Has the referee made mistakes in previous matches for Nottingham Forest? Has he sent off any players from Nottingham Forest in the past? Because what we don’t want to do is for that player to have another problem with the same referee.
“So what I’m trying to do is look at all of the reports of that referee from all seasons, the KMI reports, any mistakes that he’s made, so we can have a full picture about this referee before he goes into the game.”
What Neco Williams said about Brighton VAR controversy
Forest were not only dissatisfied with their performance against Liverpool. The defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion also resulted in a poor decision.
Forest narrowly fell against Roberto De Zerbi’s side, although Nuno and his team believed they should have faced ten men.
Jakub Moder’s wild challenge on Neco Williams earned the Brighton man merely a yellow card.
The Polish midfielder certainly caught Williams on the ankle in a hazardous manner, but his yellow card was not upgraded to a red.
Williams claimed he was surprised to see the Brighton player remain on the pitch.
He said: “For me, it was a red card. I don’t really know why VAR hasn’t seen that as a serious, serious foul. But we can’t feel sorry for ourselves. We have to put that behind us now and move forward, and it is frustrating. I don’t want to sit here and make excuses. But most of these decisions now have been going against us.”
Although Clattenburg cannot influence judgments like the one against Brighton, he can educate players on how to exploit the regulations to their advantage.
And Forest may need to do just that if they are to stay afloat this season, since they are currently ranked in the bottom three.
