The 53-year-old is currently still on gardening leave at St. James’ Park because Manchester United has not yet decided on a compensation plan. When it came time to hand over the keys to Old Trafford, Ashworth was the first person Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the minority owner of the New Red Devils, went for.

The billionaire owner of Ineos, nevertheless, is dissatisfied with Newcastle’s hardball approach and described the circumstances as “a bit silly” at an event last month. In order to get Ashworth out of his contract—whose status on Tyneside is now untenable—Toon chiefs are requesting a record fee.

In a club statement, Newcastle expressed their “disappointment” at the former Brighton player’s decision to go, but they also reassured fans that the search for a replacement has already started. According to Portuguese publication A Bola, Benfica star Braz is at the top of their shortlist to replace Ashworth.
