Enzo Maresca was glad to give the Leicester City fans the victory they desired, but pledged “never” to modify his tactics following criticism last week.

City’s promotion fate remains in their hands after picking up their second win in seven games against Norwich on Monday. The club’s most dominant 90-minute effort in months helped secure the 3-1 win.

For the first time since Maresca took over, there was a strong negative reaction at the end of the defeat to Bristol City last Friday, which the manager described as “understandable”. Despite suggestions for a backup plan, Maresca stood firm and promised his team will always play his way, as they did to great effect against the Canaries.

“I think the fans were there,” Maresca said in his post-match press conference. “We tried to make them happy by winning a game. I can understand that for them it’s the only thing that matters, the only thing that is important.

“As you know – we said it many times – we have our way to try to win the game since the start. I can understand sometimes that they want us to attack more direct. But it’s not going to happen, never, while I’m here.”

There was joy and relief in equal measure at the result, with big celebrations on the touchline when Jamie Vardy scored City’s third goal in added time. Maresca went wild with Stephy Mavididi, Abdul Fatawu, and Wilfred Ndidi.

“Yeah (we are relieved), especially for the moment,” Maresca said. “Because for different reasons, we didn’t win many games in the last five or six. So today was important.

“We started by going 1-0 down so we needed to be mentally strong. But the game was completely in control. We dominated the game. Even when we went 1-0 down it was just one corner. I’m very happy in this moment. We are in the final part, so winning games is important.

“At the end, we are human beings. Because for many reasons, we didn’t win many games, and because for some situations around the club. They are also human beings and they have emotions so when we scored the last one with Jamie, the game was finished, so we were all happy and we enjoyed the moment.”
