Neville Southall has forecast what “so-called” major clubs will do next season following the Premier League’s decision to dock Everton two extra points.
On Monday, the Toffees received their second deduction of the season, dropping Sean Dyche’s team a spot and leaving them only two points away from the relegation zone.
A total of eight points have been docked.
The conviction follows a three-day trial last week, during which the club acknowledged to a £16.6 million breach. The Premier League is reported to have pressed for a five-point deduction, but two were given owing to mitigating circumstances.
With both clubs preparing to appeal, the league table could be decided after the season’s last day. Furthermore, there has been talk of revisions to the current PSR guidelines, as Southall mentioned on Tuesday morning.
Neville Southall says ‘big clubs’ are going to do something after Everton’s PSR issues
Manchester City is still awaiting the conclusion of their 115 charges, and last week, reports surfaced regarding what would happen to the rules that have had a huge influence on Everton this season.
The Daily Mail reported this week that Premier League teams are considering scrapping PSR in favour of a ‘luxury tax’. The fine-based system will replace point deductions.
Southall has suggested this new system is the league’s biggest clubs looking to escape potential points deductions further down the line.
Taking to X, the Everton legend said: “Everton will have points taken off them this season.
Next season point deduction will be replaced by fines, I think, and guess certain so-called big clubs be able to buy way out.”
Are Everton completely out of the woods?
Unfortunately, Everton is not fully out of the woods when it comes to PSR. The most recent iNews report suggests that more terrible news is on the way. According to the article, another hearing could take place after the Premier League season concludes.
James Gray writes: “i understands that this hearing, which will look at interest and loans taken out to finance the club’s new stadium, is likely to occur after the season ends.
“However, i understands any additional points deductions adjudicated this summer will be applied to next season’s standings, meaning the Toffees could start the 2024-25 season on negative points, the first team to do since the league was inaugurated in 1992.”
The sooner this mess is cleaned up, the better for everyone involved. Clarity and efficiency are necessary, which have been lacking so far.
