Newcastle United achieved one of their most impressive victories of the 2023-24 season.

Eddie Howe’s side defeated Champions League-chasing Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 at St James’ Park, nearly repeating last season’s 6-1 destruction.

Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon scored two early goals in the first half, leaving Spurs unable to recover. Isak added his second just after the break, while Fabian Schar scored his fourth in the dying moments.

Newcastle began the day ranked eighth in the Premier League, but finished sixth, one place below Tottenham, who were knocked out of the top four owing to goal difference.

In a season hampered by injuries (they were missing 11 senior players against Tottenham), Newcastle co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi summed up the result aptly, saying, “That was special.”

And it’s tough to argue otherwise. United went four games unbeaten during the March international break, earning ten points out of a possible twelve. Their triumphs over Fulham and Tottenham are their first consecutive league victory since early December.

“I think the international break came at a really good time for us after the Manchester City game,” added Howe. “It gave us a chance for a different environment and to reset.

“Since coming back, bar half an hour at Fulham, the performances have been better, physically we’ve looked better and I hope that can grow and continue from here. There are no guarantees but I do think we are in a much better place than we were.”

United have six games remaining to secure European status. Next up is Crystal Palace on Wednesday, April 24.
