The Everton manager answered questions about his team’s performance following the 6-0 battering.
Sean Dyche characterised Everton’s defeat to Chelsea as a “horrid night”.
The Blues manager defended his tactical approach to the game, pointing out that Everton had a golden chance to grab the lead when Beto blasted over in the first few minutes – though the effort may have been flagged for offside.
But after that, he blamed a “perfect storm” of troubles for his team’s 6-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge.
It is far from where we want to be. There are absolutely no excuses for that. It was far off the mark, far from where we had been, and we don’t want to go back there.
It serves as a harsh reminder that if you do not do the essentials well. It was a strange game in the sense that the game plan we worked on started well; we should have scored early and had a chance to take the lead; we surrendered one, which is normal, but the goals were disturbingly awful. The hard yards are just tackling, reading the play, and anticipating the game.
All of the basic principles went out the window, especially in the first half, and you can’t do that in venues like this. I’ll admit that it’s unique, at least defensively.
We know we’ve struggled to score goals, but defensively, we’re a long way from where we should be. The last time we were like that was in Villa, when we were miles apart. Today was a collective downtime, a perfect storm, and we also received injuries. It was an absolutely horrible night.
