“My ambition” Anthony Gordon’s bizarre comments about Everton on The Overlap are guaranteed to infuriate Everton fans.

Following his most recent comments, Anthony Gordon has fanned tensions between himself and Everton supporters once more.

Newcastle United - Anthony Gordon

Gordon, an Everton academy graduate, signed for Newcastle United for £45 million in January 2023 (Sky Sports), where he will play Champions League games and fight for European football again this season.

While Everton remains in the bottom of the Premier League standings and struggles to score on a regular basis, Gordon has 19 goals for Newcastle this season, well exceeding his total from any of his previous seasons with the Toffees.

Speaking on The Overlap with Gary Neville, the 23-year-old’s words are sure to rile up Evertonians again after the unpleasant circumstances surrounding his exit from the club.

Talking about his career prospects, Gordon told Neville: “I’ve got one goal and purpose, to be at the very top of football. Nothing will get in the way of that.

“My ambition is to be at the top, and I couldn’t do that where I was [at Everton].

“[The departure] didn’t have to be like that, I just wanted to fulfil my ambitions, and Everton needed to sell me, but ultimately, I got what I wanted, I joined Newcastle”.

How will Anthony Gordon’s comment go down with Everton fans?

While Gordon’s statement is technically correct given Everton’s current situation, it is certain to enrage a crowd already upset by their club’s underachievement, as well as the player himself for the way in which he departed the club.

Many saw Gordon as jumping ship at the earliest opportunity when things became rough, as Everton was in the bottom three when he joined the Magpies.

During the same transfer window, Amadou Onana publicly proclaimed his willingness to stay at the club despite difficulty, which only harmed Gordon’s image among Everton fans.

Gordon scored only three goals in 17 matches throughout the first half of the 2022-23 season before moving on.

Gordon was quick to emphasise in the interview that Everton needed to sell him owing to financial concerns, and that it was not his goal for things to unfold as they did, but he made it very obvious that he was eager to leave Goodison Park.
