West Bromwich Albion will be in the Championship for the fourth time in a row in 2024–2025 after being relegated from the Premier League in 2021.Former West Brom and Scotland midfielder James Morrison retires from football | Football News | Sky Sports

the Baggies were in the top division for the great part of the 2010s until coming last in the Premier League in 2018 with just 31 points.

Albion qualified for the Championship automatically in 2020, but they were unable to hold onto their top tier standing this time, and after a year, they were back in the second tier.

James Morrison, a centre midfielder, played a key role for the Baggies during their lengthy tenure in the top division, which spanned from 2010 to 2018, and he also earned two promotions while at the team.

Morrison was a true steal.

For a reported £1.5 million, the Baggies acquired the former Scotland international from Middlesbrough in August 2007. He would stay at the Hawthorns until his retirement in 2019.

Although Morrison’s longevity is noteworthy, he should also be recognised for the creative quality he brought to the pitch. According to TransferMarkt, Morrison amassed an impressive 341 appearances for Albion throughout his spectacular 12-year stay.

Morrison, who made 35 appearances in the second division while making four goals and dishing out five assists in his debut season in the West Midlands, was a major contributor to the Baggies’ Championship triumph celebration at the end of the 2007–08 campaign.

After that, the former Boro player appeared in 30 Premier League games the next season, tallying three goals and dishing out four assists. However, it was insufficient to save his team from being demoted to the Championship right away.

Morrison did, however, play a smaller role this time around as he made just 11 appearances, managing one goal and an assist, as the Baggies secured automatic promotion back to the top tier at the end of the 2009–10 season.

Albion enjoyed eight years in the Premier League after winning two promotions in three years. The Hawthorns team was not particularly threatened by the possibility of relegation until they were relegated back to the Championship in 2018, though the 17th place finish at the end of the 2013–14 season would have had the Baggies supporters pulling teeth.
