City squandered an opportunity to widen their lead in the promotion race, as their draw at the MKM Stadium left them four points behind third place and one point behind where they were before the weekend. However, Maresca believed that referee Samuel Barrott’s decisions influenced the outcome.

The City manager was furious about the penalty his team gave up, which Mads Hermansen saved, a spot-kick he felt should have gone to Jamie Vardy in the second half, and Jean Michael Seri’s lack of a second yellow card. The Hull midfielder was already booked for preventing Wout Faes from taking a free kick.

Maresca was also upset that referee Barrott officiated City’s Boxing Day draw with Ipswich. In that game, he believed his team should have received a penalty for a foul on Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.Hull 2-2 Leicester City match highlights, reactions, ratings and Enzo Maresca's thoughts on an eventful draw - Leicestershire Live

“Sometimes there are no words,” Maresca said in his post-match press conference. “Today was the same referee as Ipswich away when, at 1-0, there was no penalty for us. Today, the penalty for them was outside the box, the second yellow card for Seri and the second penalty for us with Jamie Vardy.

“These are all crucial moments, especially these three situations. They are crucial moments. I don’t have any more words on the referee’s decisions. We haven’t been lucky with this referee. In two games, he probably cost us some points.”

Hull manager Liam Rosenior declined to comment on Seri’s potential red card, but felt both of the game’s penalties, one for the home side after Regan Slater was fouled by Stephy Mavididi and one for City after Abdul Fatawu was tripped by Seri, were correctly awarded. He said: “Both penalties were penalties. I’ve seen a replay on Regan’s but not on theirs. The penalty for us that Fabio misses, contact starts outside the box and on the line. That’s a penalty.”
