Ally McCoist in Celtic and Rangers Scottish football defence as Ibrox hero latches on Jeff Stelling

Ally McCoist has scolded Jeff Stelling for a weird outburst regarding Celtic and Rangers’ upcoming Scottish Cup final.

Philippe Clement’s side advanced to the final, where they will face Brendan Rodgers, with a 2-0 victory over Hearts at Hampden yesterday. The Hoops had faced Aberdeen in a six-goal thriller over 120 minutes the day before, drawing 2-2 after 90 minutes and 3-3 after extra time before winning on penalties.

That means they will meet in the last two for the first time since 2002, which is remarkable. Gers won 3-2 that day after coming from behind to score a late Peter Lovenkrands goal. They’ve undoubtedly played each other in the semi-finals a lot throughout that time, and they’ve played at that stage four out of the last five years.

So Stelling wasn’t buying it when Coisty and Shebahn Aherne discussed the oddity of the lack of finals on talkSPORT’s breakfast show.

He inquired, “Have they played each other a lot in the semi-finals?” So that’s why they’re not making it to the final, because they’re eliminating each other before then.

“For God’s sake, every English football fan will be thinking, ‘Rangers versus Celtic? There’s a surprise! Why don’t they just play each other weekly? “Forget the rest!”

But McCoist swatted that aside: “Jeff, I have to inform you that we up here don’t give a monkey’s what every English football fan thinks!

“Yesterday’s game was a good one, Rangers vs Hearts. The one on Saturday, what a game by the way. Celtic-Aberdeen, a brilliant game to watch, finished 3-3, Celtic won on penalties. What a game of football.”

Aherne appeared to pledge her allegiance to Celtic, adding: “Come on the Bhoys! We’ll end it on that…”
