Tensions are rising in the Scottish Women’s Premier League, with Celtic head coach Elena Sadiku reacting harshly to comments made by Rangers manager Jo Potter about Celtic’s pre-match huddle ritual.
The debate emerges immediately before the crucial Glasgow Derby encounter on Monday at Broadwood, with both teams tied at the top of the league rankings.
Potter blasted Celtic’s pre-match huddle during last week’s Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden Park, which Rangers won 2-0. He claimed it was employed as a disruptive strategy. She was dissatisfied with the length of the huddle and suggested that match officials intervene to reduce such pregame preparations.
Sadiku responded by defending her team’s tradition, saying, “We always do the same thing before games, but I think she just wants to say something and be tough about it, so I don’t care what she’s saying.” If she thinks that’s our thinking, she may think whatever she wants because I don’t care.”
She also dismissed Potter’s comments as unimportant, claiming that the huddle had always been a part of their routine and dismissing the idea that it was intended to unsettle their opponents. “I just think if there’s something that she wants to say to, I don’t know, to feel like she’s better or whatever, like let her say so, I don’t care,” Sadiku said in an interview with PLZ.
The forthcoming derby is noteworthy since both sides are now equal on points, but Celtic leads on goal difference. With only four games remaining, including this key matchup, the outcome might have a significant impact on the title race.
