Chris Sutton has criticised Philippe Clement’s early reaction to Rangers’ goalless draw with Dundee on Wednesday (17 April).
The Gers have gone three Scottish Premiership games without a win at this critical period of the season, and they are now three points behind Celtic with the same amount of games completed.
Rangers’ draw with Dundee was a difficult night as they failed to score away at Dens Park. Speaking on Sky Sports Football (17 April, 10:19 pm), Sutton reacted to Clement’s comment that the home team was “lucky” live on Sky Sports after full time [Daily Record].
He said: “I don’t know what game he was watching. To call Dundee lucky – they weren’t lucky. He did say that Rangers lacked a spark. He said that people shouldn’t jump to conclusions. The conclusion is that in a huge game – a huge couple of games – they haven’t stepped up when they needed to.
“We’re at the business end of the season and they needed to build momentum. They’re losing momentum at this moment in time and that is not a good look.”
Could Rangers have won v Dundee?
At the end of the season, the Light Blues need to be in better shape than they are currently. After drawing Celtic and losing to Ross County, they needed to recover.
Clement had no reaction, and the home team scored. Jack Butland made several excellent saves before surrendering, although the Dundee players were offside.
According to FotMob, Rangers held 66% of the ball, which converted into 17 shots. These efforts on goal resulted in only five on target, for a total of 1.06 xG, which Jon McCracken successfully blocked.
The Gers’ attacking performance was unimpressive, with no forwards making a notable contribution. Roofe had only one shot off target, but Fabio Silva and Todd Cantell had theirs stopped, while Abdallah Sima squandered a wonderful opportunity.
Clement’s team dominated the game but lacked confidence in front of goal in the end.
