Former Celtic Coach is concerned about key Celtic player following ‘uncharacteristic’ performance against Rangers

Celtic are still in the title fight thanks to a strong effort at Ibrox last Saturday, which culminated in a 3-3 draw.

In truth, the Bhoys will be disappointed that they were unable to earn maximum points from the game, as Rabbi Matondo’s curler in stoppage time saved a point for the hosts.

Nonetheless, goals from Daizen Maeda, Matt O’Riley, and Adam Idah put Celtic in a great position to win the Scottish Premiership heading into their final six league games.

Next up, St Mirren travel to Parkhead on Saturday, aiming to enhance their European prospects; however, Brendan Rodgers has a clean bill of health for his squad, should any absences be revealed in his press conference, which will be scheduled for later this week.

Regardless of whether Rangers’ game against Dundee tomorrow goes ahead, Celtic will remain at the top of the table this weekend if they win three points against Stephen Robinson’s side.

Club captain Callum McGregor came off the bench to replace Tomoki Iwata after an hour last Sunday; however, it is unclear whether the Scotland international will start this time.

Callum McGregor: Celtic captain returns from injury for ...

Former Celtic captain Neil Lennon was disappointed with McGregor’s cameo performance last weekend; but, the 51-year-old believes his recent physical difficulties may have played a role.

Speaking with PLZ Soccer, the Parkhead icon stated that his former club has the resources in the engine room to play on the front foot without their captain if necessary in upcoming games.

He stated: “I think he’s still carrying a bit. When he’s not in the line-up before the game you’re worried but the way Celtic took to the game, we didn’t miss him.

“He didn’t look great. I don’t know if he’s got a long-term problem. It’s very uncharacteristic of him. He’s very, very rusty.”

For anyone watching on Sunday, it was clear that McGregor wasn’t at full strength when he came on, but a few days of training at Lennoxtown will have done our captain the world of good heading into our match against St Mirren.

Whether or whether he makes the starting lineup this weekend, McGregor will work his way back to fitness and play an important role in the run-in.
