Everton weren’t very remarkable yesterday, but a win is a win. That was all they needed when they hosted Burnley in a vital relegation six-pointer, and if it hadn’t been for Luton Town’s late victory, the Premier League table would look very different right now.
Regardless, the Toffees remain in the strongest position, leapfrogging Brentford in the league and closing in on Crystal Palace by one point.
However, maybe more important than the victory is Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s continuous resurgence.
The attacker, who has had a difficult season for Everton, scored his second goal in five days and has rightfully received acclaim for his performance.
Ian Wright raves over Dominic Calvert-Lewin
Speaking on last night’s Match of the Day, the analysis was brief following the highlights package, but it did focus on Everton’s main player, who scored once more.
After breaking his goalless streak in midweek with a stunning penalty to earn a point at Newcastle United, Dominic Calvert-Lewin struck again when the Burnley goalkeeper whipped the ball right at him.
And, while it wasn’t the most spectacular ending to a far from vintage performance, it earned an important three points in the relegation race.
However, Ian Wright felt that the 27-year-old’s overall performance was deserving of praise, as he originally stated: ‘You’re just hoping for his sake that he can get that run of real good fitness because he’s somebody who, when he’s performing, offers you everything as a striker, including link play.
‘That was close. When you look at Muric, at the goal, it’s as if he can’t see Calvert-Lewin coming, it’s as if he’s got Harry Potter’s invisible coat on or something.’
He later added: ’He’s in good form.’
Dominic Calvert-Lewin could have a strong finish to the season
This has been one of Everton’s most wild and insane seasons.
Sean Dyche has already faced one point punishment and is on the verge of another, while also dealing with an ongoing takeover controversy and wildly variable on-pitch performances.
Nonetheless, if not for their six-point penalty, they would now be 14th, with 35 points and seven games remaining.
They have not performed poorly despite having the worst winless streak in Premier League history, and neither has Calvert-Lewin despite his terrible form.
Surprisingly, with two goals in one week, the English striker now has five league goals for the season in what has been a lengthy, difficult campaign for him.
This return to form, and, more crucially, the resurgence of some much-needed fortune, along with a favourable run-in that includes games against Sheffield United, Luton Town, Brentford, and Nottingham Forest, demonstrates a light at the end of the tunnel for both player and team.
If he maintains this mini-resurgence, Calvert-Lewin has a good chance of finishing the season with double-digit points, despite all odds.
In what has undoubtedly been the most difficult campaign of his career thus far in terms of performance, he still has a chance to finish strongly, silence the critics, and prove his survival beyond all reasonable doubt.
