The California-based franchise is set to begin play next year as the 30th team in MLS, and San Diego has some big ambitions for their first season in America’s top flight.

With Inter Miami taking MLS’s reputation to new heights with Messi’s arrival last year, other teams in the league are now hoping to capitalise on the league’s increased popularity with a superstar acquisition or two of their own.

And San Diego could be about to go one step further than Inter Miami by signing Neymar.

San Diego to battle Inter Miami to sign Brazilian superstar Neymar

According to Posta Deportes via Marca, San Diego intends to sign Al-Hilal winger and former FC Barcelona star Neymar, a player with whom Messi has had tremendous success in both La Liga and France with PSG.

With Neymar presently out due to an ACL injury, there is growing speculation that the forward may leave Saudi Arabia within the next six months, with Inter Miami linked with a bid for the attacker, who has stated that he is open to a move to Inter Miami.

Indeed, Neymar to MLS is a trade that could have some legs considering what has happened in recent weeks, but Inter Miami may struggle to land the 32-year-old owing to existing roster regulations, opening the door for  San Diego to land the attacker.

Although a reunion with Messi would be a fantasy for many football fans, the constraints of MLS’s financial rules may make the deal unfeasible for Inter Miami, while San Diego may make a significant statement by signing the Brazilian.

Neymar to MLS would be massive regardless if he reunites with Messi

Neymar and Messi playing together again would be a thrill for everyone, but the 32-year-old attacker joining MLS in general would be a huge boost for the league.

The purchase of Messi has already propelled MLS to heights few could have predicted, with additional teams poised to make big moves in the coming weeks as the league’s reputation soars.

And Neymar might be one of those names to make the switch to MLS, with San Diego a club that could suit the Brazilian due to the large Latin presence in the area as well as the franchise.
