Leicester City are now in pole position to gain automatic promotion to the Premier League.
Leicester City’s 5-0 victory over Southampton on Tuesday night virtually destroyed the Saints’ ambitions of winning automatic promotion and catching Leeds United. It was also a result that led to Leicester’s promotion to the Premier League on their first attempt.
The Foxes need only one more win from their next two games to guarantee their promotion, and that may not even be enough depending on other results. The title appears to be theirs as well, but the Leicester manager says it is not a factor to consider right now.
Enzo Maresca claims that his team is exclusively concerned with achieving promotion rather than the Championship title, with the manager unconcerned about whether they finish first or second.
“It has been a long season, 51 official matches,” Maresca said. “Before (Southampton) game, we didn’t know how many points we needed. Two, three, four, five, they lose, they win, who knows?
“The good feeling is now we know that with one win you get promoted. Two days off, recovery, and then we start to prepare for Preston, which is the next one and the most important. We’re looking just now to get promoted (not at the title). It doesn’t matter where, first or second. But in this moment, the most important thing is to win one more game to get promoted.”
Leicester might earn promotion without even playing if Leeds lose at Queens Park Rangers on Friday night, but any other outcome will let them to clinch their fate when they go to Preston North End on Monday evening.
