“I was told.” I’m not really sure what that means but Leicester City are a very, very good side with very good players and well structured. Birmingham City coach Gary Rowett

Birmingham City interim manager Gary Rowett filed a red card’ petition following a 2-1 loss to Leicester City at King Power Stadium.

Leicester pushed and puffed for much of the second half without success, and it appeared that they were on track for a score draw, which would have been a massive missed opportunity.

Fortunately for the Foxes fans, City scored late through Stephy Mavididi, who headed home Yunus Akgun’s left-footed cross.

It was Mavididi’s 13th goal of the season, and maybe the most crucial, as it propelled his team over Leeds United and Ipswich Town to the top of the Championship table, with a game in hand on the aforementioned duo.

However, the outcome may have been very different if one Leicester player had been issued a red card, as The Blues’ manager believes he should have done.

Gary Rowett believes Wout Faes should’ve been shown red card

Following the match, Rowett made a disputed assertion that Leicester defender Wout Faes should have been sent off for a challenge on Jay Stansfield in the first half.

“I thought Jay Stansfield, when Faes brings him down in the middle, there’s no cover,” Rowett said.

“I was told it wasn’t a clear enough attacking position. I’m not really sure what that means because I thought that was quite a big moment. To me, that is probably a red card,” he explained.

Rowett did agree, modestly, that the decision was not the reason his team lost on the day.

“I’m not going to grumble and make these things a reason why we haven’t won. We haven’t drawn or won the game because Leicester are a very, very good side with very good players and really well structured.”

Wout Faes fortunate not to be red-carded

Faes played a risky game by attempting the challenge, where he did, and he was rightfully given a yellow card.

The Belgium international has that rashness in his game, and he needs to strike a balance between it and being an aggressive defender.

While he has had a fantastic season, by all accounts, he has been a little sloppy in recent weeks, most notably in the 1-0 loss to Bristol City, when he was dubbed a ‘liability’.

If he wants to take the next step in his growth, he must work on refining his decision-making, and his potential red card on Saturday should serve as a caution.
