Newcastle United have long admired Conor Gallagher, and he is once again on the club’s radar.
Conor Gallagher has been a Newcastle United transfer target throughout Steve Bruce’s tenure, and the rumours have persisted after Eddie Howe’s arrival.
There has been interest in the Chelsea midfielder during almost every transfer window, but no deal has been completed. Gallagher was even denied a move to the Magpies last year, as Chelsea chose not to boost Eddie Howe’s side as they sought Champions League success.
It didn’t matter because Newcastle coped without him. However, we could have benefited much from his participation this season. Howe has had significant midfield issues, with injuries and suspension severely limiting his choices.
Newcastle currently has only three fit senior centre-midfielders: Bruno Guimaraes, Sean Longstaff, and Elliot Anderson. Joe White, their backup, has yet to start a competitive game for the team.
Conor Gallagher’s future is up in the air
With the summer transfer window approaching, Gallagher remains connected with Newcastle, with the Magpies huge fans of the England international as they consider whether or not to recruit a new midfielder.
Gallagher is certainly an option, since his Chelsea career is at a crossroads. His contract at Chelsea expires in 2025, so the Blues must either extend it or sell him this summer.
But even if they do decide to send the 24-year-old on, a move to Newcastle United is not high on Gallagher’s list of priorities.
This is according to TBR Football expert Graeme Bailey, who spoke with Geordie Boot Boys about Gallagher’s future and interest from the Magpies.
“Conor Gallagher still hasn’t got his contract offer from Chelsea, so at this moment in time he’s leaving,” he said.
“I’m told that he’s not convinced about a move to Newcastle United. Newcastle do like him, they’ve always liked him. It is not to say he wouldn’t go, but I don’t think he’s massively keen on that move – that is what I am being told.
“I think Tottenham are firmly in the driving seat for him.”
Gallagher does not appear to be interested in a move to Newcastle, thus the club will most likely be unable to bring him to St James’ Park this summer.
But this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. While our midfield choices are currently restricted, they will change by the start of next season.
Joelinton is almost back from injury, and Joe Willock and Lewis Miley should be ready to go in preseason. Sandro Tonali will not receive an extra ban from the FA and will be eligible to play on August 27th.
By September, Newcastle will have seven midfield options. That eliminates the requirement for a player like Gallagher, who is being valued at £40million.
That money can be better spent elsewhere, with the Magpies needing to prioritise a marquee winger and centre-back reinforcements.
