Jordan Pickford and Paul Dummett conspired to deny Newcastle United three points, but the Magpies were their own worst enemy tonight, unable to capitalise on a dominant effort and allowing Everton and Dominic Calvert-Lewin to score.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin hadn’t scored in 20 games, therefore, it was Newcastle who helped him break his drought. We absolutely enjoy giving out prizes to suffering gamers.
Alexander Isak gave Newcastle the lead in the first half by turning Everton’s defence inside out and firing low into the corner past Jordan Pickford, his fifth goal in a row for Newcastle.
Dan Burn then saw a second half goal called out by the closest of offside decisions, as Isak was assessed to have been ahead of the Everton defence in the buildup.
Paul Dummett’s introduction was massive … for Everton
The Magpies appeared to run out of steam in the second half, and pulling off Elliot Anderson, who was struggling, took some of the impetus out of the side, but losing Lewis Hall proved to be the final nail in the Geordies’ coffin.
Hall, who hasn’t played much this season, visibly ran out of steam and appeared to cramp up, forcing him to come off, which, given our incredible injury list, meant Paul Dummett got a run out.
It didn’t take long for Dummett to make his mark on the game with an unexpected RKO on Ashley Young in the box, which the official missed but VAR picked up. The official awarded the penalty after a needless on-field review, but how VAR didn’t give it after one look is beyond us.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin went up to score his required goal against Newcastle.
Newcastle will feel like it was two points dropped rather than one gained
Jordan Pickford made several huge stops throughout the game to keep Everton in it, but Newcastle should have won after having one goal disallowed, a chance saved off the line, and even hitting the post with a James Tarkowski deflection.
Newcastle have already wasted a chance to move up to seventh position after West Ham drew 1-1 with Tottenham Hotspur, unless Spurs score between now and full-time in that game, in which case Newcastle would be ahead of West Ham on goal difference.
Everton must have felt like they had won, whereas Newcastle clearly lost two points. We just hope it’s the last time we see Paul Dummett on a football pitch. What were his thoughts?
