‘Fantastic’ player sold by Nottingham Forest is now worth more than £50 million.

Johnson’s exit was not particularly surprising. Last season, he scored eight Premier League goals for Forest, so there was bound to be plenty of interest.

Johnson, who came up through the club’s academy, excelled at the senior level. He was vital in the Reds’ promotion to the Premier League in 2021/22.

After a rocky start in the Premier League, the winger flourished following the World Cup. He scored key goals for Forest against Leeds and Everton, which helped the club avoid relegation.

The youngster would almost certainly be offloaded. Forest must meet profitability and sustainability criteria, and Johnson was always the player to bring a hefty transfer fee.

Now, some statistics reveal that Johnson is performing extraordinarily well at Tottenham. It has also been speculated on how much the 22-year-old is worth following his exit from Forest.

The CIES Football Observatory Weekly Post released a document today. They showed the world’s top 100 players under the age of 23 whose transfer value has climbed the highest in the past six months.

Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal leads the list, followed by Benfica’s Joao Neves and Girona defender Savio Moreira.

Johnson departed Forest for £47.5 million in August, and his value has already climbed. According to this assessment, the player’s value has increased by £13 million as a result of his performances for Tottenham.

The forward has played an important role in Ange Postecoglou’s plans at Tottenham. He has scored five goals and seven assists for his new club, and it would appear that his valuation has now soared.

Steve Cooper was a big fan of Johnson at Forest. He described the player as ‘amazing’ during a 1-0 victory over Leeds, where the young prodigy scored the winning goal.

Forest have to learn lessons from Johnson’s departure

It’s difficult to criticise Forest and the hierarchy for selling Johnson. The Reds were docked four points for their financial mismanagement, and if they hadn’t sold him, they would have reported losses that were much out of proportion.

However, there are lessons to be learned from a Forest perspective. If the clubs had taken a more thorough approach to transfers following promotion, things might not have gotten to this position.

In fairness, certain lessons were learned during the last two windows. Many of the permanent additions have made an impression, including Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi, who replaced Johnson for a quarter of his price.

If Forest survives this season, it will have to go down as a  lucky escape. The club’s recruitment needs to get better, and hopefully less of the club’s prized assets will be sold in the future.
