Garry Birtles, a Nottingham Forest veteran, has expressed sympathy for one of the current players, who should be unhappy with his teammates.
The Reds failed to put more distance between themselves and the bottom three on Saturday, drawing 2-2 with Wolves at the City Ground.
If Luton win Brentford on Saturday, they will leapfrog Forest and drop the Reds to the bottom three before Sunday’s game against Everton.
Forest scored through Morgan Gibbs-White and Danilo at the weekend, but it wasn’t enough, as Wolves’ Matheus Cunha struck twice.
Birtles has now said that he had pity for one Forest player over the weekend, and he should be livid with his teammates.
Garry Birtles feels so sorry for Nottingham Forest player Chris Wood
According to Birtles, Wood should have scored more goals if some of his teammates had played better.
This season, the striker has 13 goals in all competitions, and we can’t imagine where Forest would be without them.
Wood has been an excellent addition to the squad this season, and the £15 million paid to Newcastle suddenly seems like a value.
Birtles believes he could have scored more goals if his teammates had performed better at key points in particular games.
He has now revealed what he would have done if service had been poor while he was playing as a striker for the Reds.
He explained on the Forest Focus podcast: “I feel so sorry for Chris Wood.
“He makes his run as a striker and then they delay, they check back, they take another touch and it’s so annoying as a striker when you see your teammates do that. “I’d be going mad at them.”
Scoring goals isn’t the issue for Forest – something else is
Forest doesn’t have any trouble finding the net; it’s only keeping them out on the other end that has been difficult.
The Reds have conceded 22 goals from set pieces this season, and with Everton one of the greatest in those scenarios, Saturday looks ominous.
However, Wood has demonstrated that he can step up and become Forest’s number one striker, producing when Taiwo Awoniyi is injured.
The 32-year-old will want to score more goals before the season ends, and Birtles believes that if his teammates provide opportunities for him, he can convert them.
Forest must work together to get out of this predicament, and with Wood directing the battle, there is hope that
he can keep finding the way to the goal.
