Nottingham Forest’s transfer market activity since promotion back to the Premier League has been irregular, with the Reds signing 34 new players since their play-off final victory over Huddersfield Town in 2022.
Many of the additions have shown to be wise investments, with players such as Morgan Gibbs-White and Murillo thriving and already being linked with £50 million+ transfers this summer.
The club will not want to lose any of its great players, but with the recent points reduction for a PSR violation, owner Evangelos Marinakis may be forced to sell one of the two to avoid additional penalties.
Forest overspent by £34.5 million in the previous fiscal year, with the club’s market activities probably contributing to the large deficit.
One player in particular was a blatant waste of money and wages, leaving the City Ground less than six months after his arrival.
Jonjo Shelvey’s stats at Nottingham Forest
Jonjo Shelvey, a midfielder from Newcastle United, joined the Reds for an unknown fee in January 2023, with his experience crucial in the battle for Premier League survival.
However, the deal was a complete catastrophe for both teams, with the 32-year-old making only eight appearances in the second half of the season.
He committed an awful error against Aston Villa before a heated argument with manager Steve Cooper, which resulted in him being dropped from the squad and ordered to train with the reserves.
Shelvey never played for the club again, instead signing on loan with Caykur Rizespor in Turkey during the transfer window last summer.
However, according to The Guardian, the Reds terminated his contract prior to his move, leaving it unclear whether he is permanently signed for the Turkish club or will become a free agent at the conclusion of the season.
Jonjo Shelvey’s wage at Nottingham Forest
Shelvey, a former Liverpool midfielder, earned £75k a week, making him one of the club’s best earners during his brief stint in Nottingham.
Despite his recent success in the first team under Nuno, his weekly income at Forest was more than twice that of Forest youngster Murillo, who makes only £30k.

If the article is to be believed, the club did a fantastic job wiping his salaries off the bill, especially given his attitude issues during his time with the East Midlands.
His move to the City Ground was definitely a mistake, but given the club’s recent problems with the Premier League’s FFP rules, his salaries have saved the club almost £3.9 million per year – his original contract is slated to expire at the end of next season.
The club must use the Shelvey deal as a warning ahead of the summer transfer window, as the Reds cannot afford to spend foolishly if they are to avoid further PSR fines in the future.
