Following the announcement that Nottingham Forest may be forced to part ways with one of their great players this summer, the club must begin to reduce their bloated squad.
The Reds now have 28 players in the first team, with many others on loan away from the City Ground who are anticipated to return at the end of their current contracts.
Emmanuel Dennis, Remo Freuler, and Lewis O’Brien are just three members of the Reds’ squad that are out on loan, with none expected to be part of Nuno Espírito Santo‘s long-term plans.
Scott McKenna is another Forest player on loan, with the Scottish international out of contract at the end of the season and unlikely to sign a new deal. The 27-year-old is expected to become a free agent.
Despite the four players named above, the club should consider parting ways with another loanee, who needs a fresh start following a difficult few months at Forest and on loan.
Joe Worrall’s stats at Nottingham Forest since promotion
After progressing through the Nigel Doughty Academy, defender Joe Worrall found his way into the Forest first team, where he played an important role in the club’s promotion to the Premier League in 2022.
Despite the 20+ arrivals at the City Ground in the summer of 2022, Worrall remained at the heart of the Reds’ defence, being chosen captain and making 30 games in England’s top division until falling down the pecking order at the start of the 2023/24 season.
The additions of players like as Murillo and Andrew Omobamidele limited the 27-year-old to just seven appearances until January, with the defender also told to practice away from the first team.
Although it is unclear what transpired between the defender and previous manager Steve Cooper, The Athletic confirmed that Worrall was instructed to train separately following a conflict.
His fate remained unchanged under new manager Nuno, as the academy graduate left his boyhood club on a temporary basis during the recent January transfer window to join Turkish Süper Lig side Besiktas until the end of the season.
How much Joe Worrall earn at Nottingham Forest?
Despite signing a new contract until the summer of 2026 only six months ago, Worrall appears to have played his final game for the club, as the club needs to clear his pay.
The local lad presently makes a reported £50,000 per week, with the club potentially saving over £2.6 million in salaries alone – regardless of any transfer fee received for Worrall.
His weekly income is already higher than Murillo’s, who is now making only £30,000 per week, despite the 21-year-old’s recent ties with Liverpool, Arsenal, and PSG.

Worrall, regrettably, has not made the Premier League cut, with the defender displaying flashes of talent but failing to maintain performance levels.
That, combined with his fallout and Forest’s FFP and PSR issues, should prompt the club to attempt to permanently sell the 6-foot-3 defender when the summer transfer window opens.
