Philippe Clement has responded to Dujon Sterling’s stinging comments about the Rangers, admitting they stem from inexperience.
The Gers utility man admitted they’ve been awful in recent games, blaming a lack of belief for getting only one point from games against Ross County and Dundee. And the 24-year-old admitted he didn’t know how he and his teammates could break out of their present rut, with the title threatening to slip away.
His manager believes that such honest statements should not be expressed in front of the media, but he defends his player by stating that it stems from frustration and inexperience. The Belgian contrasted it to an interview with Virgil van Dijk following Liverpool’s Europa League defeat at the hands of Atalanta in which he rallied fans for the rest of the season.
Clement says the ex-Celtic man showed how it’s done in terms of speaking to the press after a disappointment.
He said: “It’s the words of a player who is disappointed because we lost points. Who maybe lacks a little bit of experience in that way.
“I see Virgil van Dijk giving a press interview yesterday after the game, it’s totally different. And that’s the way it should be because those are things for young players to learn and become better at.
“It’s more talking out of frustration but I know we can count on Dujon on the field. What he did the last couple of
months, the moment’s he’s been fit. That’s also not been the case enough for me so we will work with him on that also.”
