Leicester City’s fight against Financial Fair Play (FFP) is back in the spotlight following reports that the club could face a points deduction in the Premier League next season.
According to The Sun, City is under investigation by Premier League and Championship clubs for two breaches of Profit and Sustainability (PSR) rules. Clubs believe Leicester exceeded the top flight’s £105 million loss limit over the three years ending last season.
Rivals also believe Leicester will exceed the £83 million in combined losses they can incur over the years ending with the current season. The report does, however, suggest that promotion back to the Premier League could be a way to avoid any sanctions.
Leicester has yet to release its financial results for the fiscal year ending in 2023. Everton and Nottingham Forest are facing punishment for alleged breaches of the Premier League’s PRS rules during the same season.
Leicester’s financial situation is widely known among fans. Frustrations about the lack of incomings at the end of the January transfer window were visible at the start of February, not only among the fans but also with Enzo Maresca.
Here’s everything the City manager has said about the club’s restricted transfer business.
After the January transfer window closed, Maresca was asked about the failed attempt to bring Inter Milan midfielder Stefano Sensi to the King Power Stadium due to financial constraints.
He said, “I laugh because since I arrived here the first question is always about injuries! Today, the transfer window. I will answer you now and probably I will have to say the same again four or five times: the transfer window is closed. I’m not talking or judging anything.
“It’s not the moment. The only moment now is Stoke tomorrow. Later, probably we’re going to discuss about this. But now is not the moment. Now the focus is on Stoke.”
When asked if he could explain why Sensi’s deal fell through, Maresca replied, “Stoke tomorrow. I love Sensi, Sensi’s not here, he’s Inter’s player. Now the focus is on Stoke tomorrow.”
Hands tied despite boost
After the January transfer window closed, Maresca was asked about the failed attempt to bring Inter Milan midfielder Stefano Sensi to the King Power Stadium due to financial constraints.
Sensi stumbling block
He said, “I laugh because since I arrived here, the first question has always been about injuries!” Today is the transfer window. I’ll respond now, and I’ll probably have to repeat it four or five times: the transfer window has closed. I am not saying or judging anything.
“It is not the right moment. The only opportunity now is Stoke tomorrow. We’ll probably discuss this later. But now is not the time. Now the focus is on Stoke.”
When asked if he could explain why Sensi’s deal fell through, Maresca replied, “Stoke tomorrow. Sensi isn’t here; he plays for Inter. Now the focus is on Stoke tomorrow.”
Player admission
The Foxes manager wanted a left-footed defender and an attacking midfielder in January, with the latter becoming a priority after Casadei was recalled by Chelsea. Maresca did admit, however, that any new arrivals would only occur if players left.
Prior to the window opening, he stated: “In this moment, I don’t want them to think about January, even if some of them are already thinking about January, which is normal. We’ll see in January if some of them come to ask to leave, and we’ll see how we can find solutions for them as well as for ourselves.
“The only thing I can say is that, for us, the situation is quite clear in terms of the January market. We know as a club what we need. We’ll see.”
