Todd Cantwell, Rangers’ midfield dynamo, has thrown down the gauntlet to Celtic’s Callum McGregor, claiming his hunger for winning outweighs that of the Hoops’ serial winner.

The pair had harsh words at the end of a thrilling 3-3 draw at Ibrox earlier this month, but Cantwell is evident that their competitive drive derives from a mutual desire to collect trophies.

McGregor has 20 trophies from his time at Celtic, and Cantwell is motivated to match and surpass that total, beginning with the Viaplay Cup. Following his outstanding performance in the Scottish Cup semi-final against Hearts, the ex-Norwich City man is eager to continue his silverware chase under the guidance of Philippe Clement, reports the Daily Record.

In an honest interview with Sky Sports, Cantwell said: “There’s a rivalry, right? Listen, there are things spoken on and off the pitch. And as a player, I believe you should show respect. To be honest, I want to win just as much as he (McGregor), if not more, because he has been up here for quite some time.

“It’s a rivalry, it’s a competition. Both teams want to win, both teams need to win. It stops there, that’s all it is.”

He added: “The fans who idolise us and watch us and support us, the one thing they ask from a baseline is the person in that shirt they’re representing gives absolutely everything.

“As a player, you have to know what you are signing up for. I did, don’t get me wrong, have some things caught me by surprise? A little bit, yes.

“I came from a club (Norwich) which was a little bit different set-up, different league, different country. So, it’s a bit of adapting and understanding what is required of me from now until the end of the season, I really hope I can provide what I want to.”
