Under-fire Stuart Attwell has received public backing from Luton Town fans following Nottingham Forest’s contentious statement about the official.
Luton fans have rallied behind Stuart Attwell, who was controversially revealed to be a Hatters fan.
Nottingham Forest made a statement following their 2-0 loss to Everton, complaining about the rejection of three penalty claims. They claimed to have “warned” referees’ body Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) that the VAR, Attwell, supported relegation rivals Luton, but that PGMOL did not take anything.
The Premier League could penalise Forest over the statement, with the league claiming it was
“extremely disappointed” by their comments and adding that it was “never appropriate to improperly question the integrity of match officials”.
The club went on to call for rules on referees’ and VARs’ allegiances to be extended so that “contextual rivalries” as well as local rivalries were taken into account.
As the fallout from Forest’s controversial statement rumbles on, Attwell was given a public show of support by Luton fans at Wolves, with a banner reading “Stuart Attwell: He’s one of our own” being unfurled in the away section.
The message went down well with fans, with one saying: “Gotta say, that’s pretty funny [laughing face emoji].” Another added: “Good banter to be fair.” A third quipped: “Love that the Luton fans are properly leaning into it.”
Forest will not have seen the funny side, but they will have relished the outcome, as Luton were defeated 2-1 at Molineux.
A week after being hammered 5-1 by Brentford at Kenilworth Road, the Hatters fell behind to Hwang Hee-chan’s strike just before the break, and Toti’s diving header increased the hosts’ lead five minutes into the second half.
Carlton Morris scored with 10 minutes remaining in normal time, but Luton were unable to avoid a third consecutive loss and fifth in six games.
